The concept
Cinemantle is a daily guessing game. Every day at Paris midnight, a new mystery film is picked from a curated pool of several hundred classics. Your goal: guess it in as few tries as possible. You can enter any movie as a guess — the game tells you how semantically close it is to the target.
Rules, step by step
- 1. Type a movie. Use the search bar to enter any title. Pick a film from the suggestions.
- 2. Read your hint. The game gives you three pieces of information:
- A similarity score out of 100 (higher = closer).
- A temperature: from 🧊 freezing to 😱 burning, via 🥶 cold, 😎 warm, 🥵 hot, and 🔥 very hot.
- If you're in the top 1000 nearest films, a rank out of 1000.
- 3. Adapt your strategy. If you're 🥶 cold, try a film from a different genre. If you're 🥵 hot, stay in the same universe and refine.
- 4. Find it, share. When 🥳 appears, you've won. Share your temperature grid — it doesn't spoil the film, only your journey.
Temperatures
- Burning — one of the best possible guesses.
- Very hot — top 10 nearest films.
- Hot — top 100.
- Warm — top 500.
- Cold — edge of the board, still far.
- Freezing — out of pool, unrelated.
- Found! — this is the film.
Tips
- Start broad: a popular film from a clear genre (drama, action, sci-fi) to triangulate the territory.
- If you get a good temperature, explore the same director, cast, or era.
- A good strategy is to try recent films, then classics: the pool spans hundreds of iconic films across all eras.
- Keep your streak alive: come back every day to grow your 🔥 count.
Frequently asked questions
- Is it free?
- Yes — 100% free, no signup, no download.
- How many times can I play per day?
- One puzzle a day, the same for everyone. Come back tomorrow for a new film.
- How does similarity work?
- Each film is represented as an embedding vector built from its synopsis, genre, tone, and cast. The score reflects the distance between your guess and the target in that space.
- My film isn't showing up. Why?
- The engine indexes ~50,000 TMDB films. If yours is missing, ping us on Twitter or Instagram (@cinemantle) and we'll add it.
